Sharing a small liveaboard with strangers is fine for solo travelers. With kids, the math changes:
- Pace you control. Skip the pre-dawn Padar climb if your toddler slept badly. Add a second calm-water snorkel stop instead. On a shared boat, the group vote wins.
- Cabins together. A buyout means your family sleeps in adjacent cabins, not scattered among other guests.
- Meal timing. Early dinner for little ones, later for adults — the crew flexes to you.
- Fewer safety variables. You know exactly who is aboard and how many life jackets fit small bodies.

What park fees does a family pay on top of the boat price?
Komodo National Park entrance fees are usually separate from your boat fare and rarely included — assume you pay them on top. As of 2026, common weekday rates run about IDR 150,000 for entrance, IDR 115,000 for trekking, IDR 15,000 for snorkeling, and IDR 80,000-100,000 per group for a ranger. Weekends can carry a surcharge.

A note that reassures parents: the boat crew typically collects the full park fee in advance, and guests often reimburse in IDR cash on arrival. A widely discussed international-visitor conservation fee of IDR 3,750,000 was never implemented — earlier proposals floated IDR 2,900,000-5,800,000, but those are past proposals, not today’s fees, and current charges are far lower. Bring cash; card machines are not reliable out on the islands.
Is a Komodo boat trip safe for kids?
The park’s own rules exist to keep everyone safe, and they are strict. As of a February 2026 regulation summary, the park caps visitors at 1,000 per day across Padar, Komodo, Pink Beach and every dive and snorkel site — so spots must be booked and paid in advance. For families, three rules matter most:
- Certified ranger on every trek. All walks on Komodo Island and Rinca Island must be led by a certified ranger. Independent walking is not allowed — a real reassurance when Komodo dragons are nearby. Keep a safe distance, stay on marked paths, and never feed wildlife.
- Mandatory life jackets. Life jackets must be worn during speedboat travel and in rough seas. Confirm your boat carries child-size jackets before you pay.
- Designated snorkel zones only. Currents here are strong; snorkeling and diving are permitted only in marked areas.
Every passenger must also pre-register at least one day before departure: send the boat host a passport copy showing the photo, plus full name, nationality and passport number. Passport details alone are no longer enough, and entry can be denied without it. Do this for each child, too.
When should a family book — and which season is calmest?
The dry season, April to November, brings calm seas, sunny days and clear water — the right window for a family. The rainy season, December to March, means rougher water, and most multi-day boat trips pause from January to March; one-day speedboats usually still run. For young kids prone to seasickness, aim for the dry-season middle and book early, since the 1,000-per-day cap fills popular dates.
Getting there is easy: Komodo Airport at Labuan Bajo (LBJ), on the western tip of Flores, takes daily flights from Bali, Jakarta and other Indonesian cities. From town it is about 1-2 hours by boat to the park, slow boat versus speedboat.
