How many days do you really need for Komodo?
The honest answer depends on your calendar, not the marketing. Komodo National Park sits about 1-2 hours by boat from Labuan Bajo town on the western tip of Flores, and Komodo Airport takes daily flights from Bali, Jakarta and other Indonesian cities. Once you sleep aboard, the park’s best sites string together in a natural loop — and that loop is what dictates how many nights you actually need.
A 3D2N sleep-aboard trip is the sweet spot for a reason: it covers every marquee stop at a human pace. Two nights let you catch a Padar sunrise on one morning and still have time for Taka Makassar, Kalong Island’s sunset flying foxes, and extra snorkel spots like Angel Island. A 2D1N trip hits the same headline sights but compresses them, while 4D3N and longer routes open up dive sites, slower mornings, and the run toward Lombok via Saleh Bay’s whale sharks.

Shared open trip or private charter — which fits your dates?
Every duration sells two ways. Private pricing scales with the boat: a simple wooden phinisi sits near the floor, while larger boats with en-suite cabins and air-conditioning climb well above it. For baseline context, one-day speedboat tours run roughly IDR 600,000-1,500,000 per person — useful if you only have an afternoon, but they never leave you time for a Padar sunrise.
What do park fees and rules add on top?
Park fees are separate from your boat fare and usually not included. They are commonly quoted at weekday rates, with a possible weekend surcharge. As of 2026, typical per-person tickets run about IDR 150,000 entrance, IDR 115,000 trekking, and IDR 15,000 snorkeling, plus a ranger fee of roughly IDR 80,000-100,000 per group. The crew usually collects the full Komodo Park fee in advance, and guests often reimburse it locally in IDR cash on arrival.
A few rules to plan around, all current as of 2026:
- Daily cap. Komodo National Park limits visitors to 1,000 per day across the whole park — Padar, Komodo Island, Pink Beach and every dive and snorkel site — per a February 2026 regulation summary. Spots must be booked and paid in advance.
- Pre-registration is mandatory. Every passenger must send the boat host a passport copy showing the photo, plus full name, nationality and passport number, at least one day before departure. Passport details alone are no longer enough, and entry can be denied without this.
- Certified rangers only. All treks on Komodo and Rinca Islands must be led by a certified ranger; independent walking is not allowed.
- Fees you might not expect. A traveler’s drone permit was reported at IDR 2,000,000, and drones require official permission. Night treks need a special permit.
One clarification travelers ask about constantly: a previously proposed international-visitor conservation fee of IDR 3,750,000 was not implemented. Earlier figures of IDR 2,900,000-5,800,000 were past proposals, not current charges — present fees are the lower ones listed above.
When should you go, and when do the boats pause?
The dry season, April to November, is the best window: calm seas, sunny skies and excellent underwater visibility. The rainy season runs December to March with rougher water, and most multi-day boat trips pause during January to March, though one-day speedboats typically still operate. If your dates fall in that window and you have your heart set on sleeping aboard, ask the trip desk early — availability tightens fast.
How does booking actually work?

- Pre-register your passengers. Send each passport photo page plus full name, nationality and passport number to the host at least one day before departure.
- Budget park fees separately. Expect to settle entrance, trekking, snorkeling and ranger fees in IDR cash on arrival, or as your host directs.
- Get everything in writing. Request a written invoice, boat photos, and safety-equipment confirmation. Life jackets must be worn on speedboats and in rough seas, and local reports note some Labuan Bajo boats are not safe — book only through verified companies with registered business details, and avoid unusually low prices.
- Confirm and pay in advance so your spot counts against the 1,000-per-day cap.
